At right: Joe Satriani at the No Borders Music Festival in Tarvisio on
28 July 2011 (Jeff Campitelli, shown behind him, is on drums).
Far right & below: my daughter’s first (electroacoustic) guitar—I love the curves!

Reminiscing about Summer

One of the many highlights of last summer was the chance to see Joe Satriani play in Tarvisio (a tiny mountain town in the north of Italy). Joe had been off my radar for several years; I loved his music when I discovered him back in college, but as tape decks got phased out, so did my Joe tapes. This past year, my daughter has started gravitating toward the same classic rock I grew up listening to and, taking its natural course, this led to a desire to learn how to play the guitar. As I was thinking of guitarists that would broaden her horizons, I remembered Joe: she was instantly inspired.

A lot of people have never heard of Joe Satriani; I imagine this has something to do with the fact that his music rarely has lyrics. Words can add so much to a song, and a lead singer typically gives a band its voice—both literally & figuratively—but somehow Joe manages to convey stories & emotions with his guitar. He’s also backed up by other talented musicians on bass, drums and keyboard.

When my daughter and I found out that his summer tour included one Italian stop, we decided to take the train up to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a region that neither of us had visited before. It was like traveling from summer to winter in a single day (and the concert ended up being moved from the town’s main square to the local indoor sports center because of rain earlier that afternoon), but it was an absolute thrill to be there. While this kind of music may not be everyone’s cup of tea (I think my parents were slightly horrified that I took my 13-year-old daughter—and couldn’t understand if it was more for her or for me), I have to say that ‘genius’ was the predominant word running through my mind during the entire show.
