Birthday Cake

The cake has always been an important part of
my family’s birthday tradition. Even though we are
spread across four continents most of the year, whenever we are together even remotely close to one of our
birthdays, we take the chance to celebrate with a cake.

Today was my daughter’s fourteenth birthday—
it seemed like the perfect occasion for a three-layer chocolate cake. Instead of the Devil’s Food Cake that I often make for birthdays, I decided to try something new this time. The over-the-top frosting used in this recipe is what got my attention, and it did not disappoint.

The sun had nearly disappeared by the time the cake was ready, so the photos I got don’t really do it justice, but hopefully the image I’ve chosen at least conveys the spirit of the cake. I have to admit that even I was a little over-whelmed by the quantities of butter & sugar that went into this creation, but tomorrow I’ll share the recipe in case anyone else is tempted to try it out; if you are a chocolate-lover, you will likely be delighted!
