Beneath the water Lilies

8 x 10 Print

Printed with archival inks on

Premium Glossy Photo Paper

Flanking the east side of Piazzale Michelangelo is the Giardino dell’Iris, where irises are cultivated among a terraced olive grove. It’s open for only three weeks each May, which never seems like enough time to enjoy this casual—haphazard, almost, but in the most pleasant way—garden. I love the lily pond especially, and must have as many photos of it as of the irises. The composition of Beneath the Water Lilies brings me a sense of harmony (as explained in the passage at right). I find the space between the lily pads as intriguing as the organic mass of notched green discs.

Beneath the Water Lilies is printed on professional glossy paper that brings out the reflective nature of the lily pond. The image itself measures 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm), and is surrounded by a narrow white border. The print is titled & signed on the back, and packaged in a clear archival sleeve. (Click on the image for a larger view; please note that the images you see on the site are saved at a low resolution for the web, but they are of course printed at high resolution.)

“The irises were especially beautiful this year (and I couldn’t resist stopping to photograph what would have amounted to an impressive bouquet’s-worth) but I found the pond at the bottom of the garden to be even more intriguing. I was drawn to the resulting compositions created by the repetition of countless lily padsin their various stages of growth and furled/unfurlednessand the space between, rich with layers of reflections and shadows. It reads like a map . . . a mass of lily pad ‘continents’ separated by a pond-water ‘ocean’. In looking at the photo I experience a strong feeling of balance, which is the underlying theme of my latest artist’s book.”
