“To-do lists are best kept abstract, leaving room for serendipity. ‘See how easy it is to get lost,’ might be at the top of the list; indeed, it’s not long before the maze of streets and canals leads to something unexpected.”

Maybe it’s because of the frame of mind we adopt when traveling—ready for adventure, open to anything—but, for whatever reason, each place I have visited has offered countless serendipitous moments. And nowhere more so than Venice.

I was wandering around the Dorsoduro neighborhood one evening when I had déjà vu; yet I was quite certain that I hadn’t walked this route before (it was only my first full day in the city). Then I glanced in the shop at the foot of the bridge and saw a poster advertising Summertime (the 1955 film starring Katharine Hepburn), and realized it was the antique shop that had played a key role in the story. (Hepburn’s spinster character had bought a red goblet from the handsome antique dealer, with whom she went on to share a short-lived/ill-fated romance.) As I paused to photograph the poster, I noticed the sunset reflected in the shop window, and how nicely it played off the one in the poster. While the reflected bell tower, which leaned ever so slightly, was not that of San Marco (as in the poster), it, too, seemed to be paying homage to the advertisement.

When I next returned to Venice I found that the shop had been transformed from an antique shop into a toy store (see photo at right). The off-kilter chandelier in the window and the reflection of the bell tower were all that I recognized from before . . . how fortunate I was to have stumbled into this particular corner of Venice while it still contained traces of its moment in the limelight.

The photo is printed on 100% cotton, museum-
