“The Arno shimmers through Florence, offering a welcome pause in the middle of the stone-paved city. The weather’s mood affects the sky and the buildings, transforming the reflections as the light changes, and the wind plays with the texture of the river, sometimes turning the water stormy, other times rippling it softly. At its worst, the river’s color recalls a cold cup of weak, milky tea, but other times it will assume a striking shade of bright olive green, a bold, breathtaking blue or a mysterious, deep mercury; on the sunniest mornings the Arno glitters like the Las Vegas strip.”

One recent Sunday afternoon my daughter and I walked over to our favorite neighborhood gelateria for an end-of-the-weekend treat. Not only is the gelato excellent (and reasonably priced), but its location at the foot of Ponte alla Carraia gives you a chance to enjoy your gelato with a view of the river. We were lucky to find the sun at that especially flattering position in the western sky—glancing warmly on the riverside buildings across from us—and the river was so still that the buildings were perfectly mirrored on the water. I didn’t have my camera, but I made a note of the time so I could capture the golden reflections another day.

I found the Arno in a very different state when I returned to the bridge with my camera a few days later. While the light was just as stunning, a stiff breeze rippled the water, marring the perfect reflections. Of course the ‘canvas’ of water was still painted with amazing reflections, so I took a string of photos before continuing west to see if I could find some smoother water beyond the weir.

The wind clearly had no intention of blowing out of town any time before sunset, but I captured plenty of intriguing compositions on my walk downriver—and all the way back again. An hour spent wandering along the Arno feels like such a gift, and I went home, full of anticipation, to upload the images (which for me is like opening a big, fancy present . . . I love to see what shows up after my local excursions).

These photos, which were all taken in a single afternoon, are printed on professional glossy photo paper; each image measures 8 x 8 inches (20.1 x 20.1 cm), and is surrounded by a narrow white border. The prints are titled & signed on the back, and packaged in a clear archival sleeve.

I have arranged the reflections into three possible ‘quartets’, but you are welcome to assemble your own collection; simply specify the image numbers on your order. Click on any image for larger versions & descriptions. (Please note that the images you see on the site are saved at a low resolution for the web, but they are of course printed at high resolution.)
